At about 650 km from the North East of Mauritius, Rodrigues Island stretches over a surface area of 108 km 2 and is of volcanic origins. The island enjoys a tropical climate with temperatures varying between 28 and 35°C during summer. The population of the island is about 41,670 people. Some 20 coral islets namely Gombrani, L’Hermitage and Ile aux Chats among others nestle in the lagoon. Ile aux Cocos and Ile aux Sables among the islets in the lagoon of Rodrigues are famous bird sanctuaries.
